OkMap Tutorial - Cleaning and Analyzing a GPS Track
Published on April 15, 2026 - 4 minute read
OkMap tutorial for importing, cleaning and analyzing a GPS track recorded in the field using DEM elevation data.
In this video, we show how to correct elevations, remove redundant points and obtain reliable route statistics and charts
using OkMap's GPS track analysis tools.
The result is an optimized and accurate GPX track, ready for further analysis, editing or use on GPS devices.
OkMap provides advanced tools for GPX track editing and analysis, allowing you to correct errors,
improve data accuracy and obtain reliable statistics.
To better understand this tutorial, we recommend watching first:
Procedure:
- Open a georeferenced raster map or a web map
- Download elevation data (DEM)
- Load the track recorded from the GPS
- Correct elevation using DEM data
- Remove redundant or incorrect track points
- Simplify the track if necessary
- Analyze route statistics
- Analyze elevation profile graphs
- Save the cleaned track as a new GPX file
Tips:
- Use elevation correction to improve profile accuracy
- Remove GPS point clusters generated during pauses
- Reduce points only enough to preserve route detail
- Compare the recorded track with the map to identify GPS errors and improve GPX file quality
Common errors:
- Not correcting GPS track elevation
- Not removing point clusters generated during stops
- Removing too many points and losing route accuracy
- Not verifying consistency between track and real route
