OkMap - Tutorials
Learn the most common operations in OkMap with these step-by-step video tutorials.
These tutorials to help you use OkMap for mapping, navigation and outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and search and rescue.
The interface shown in the video may differ slightly from the latest version of OkMap, but the workflow remains the same.
Georeference a raster map
This video describes the procedure for georeferencing a raster map. The parameters to be entered are: the Coordinate Reference System (CRS) of the map and at least 3 georeferencing points whose coordinates are known.
Steps
- Load the raster map into OkMap
- Define the map CRS (datum and projection)
- Insert control points with known coordinates
- Check alignment and errors
- Save the georeferenced map
Tips
- Use well distributed points
- Avoid collinear points
OkMap Desktop manual (see paragraph: Calibrate a raster map).
Create tracks and display graphs and statistics
This video describes the procedure for drawing a track on a map, display the track's statistics and produce a graph showing the altimetric profile.
Steps
- Download the map's elevation data (DEM)
- Draw the track on the map
- Open statistics panel
- View elevation profile
Tips
- Download DEM for altitude accuracy
- Set graph smoothing for better viewing
OkMap Desktop manual (see paragraph: Tracks).
Edit a track
This video describes a procedure for modify a track drawn on a map.
Steps
- Load a web map
- Draw a track on the map
- Move a point
- Add some points in middle of the track
- Select and delete multiple points
- Use the eraser tool to delete points
Tips
- Zoom in for precision
- Enable moving objects on the map
OkMap Desktop manual (see paragraph: Operations on objects).
Generate a Garmin Custom Map
This video shows how to produce a tiled map (in this case a Garmin custom map) starting from a previously georeferenced raster map.
Steps
- Load a georeferenced map
- Optimize tiling
- Select the tiles to exclude
- Export to KMZ format
- Open the produced KMZ file with Google Earth
- Check the map overlay
Tips
- Keep tile size within limits
- Optimize image quality (between 80% and 95%)
- Use the transparency slider in GE to check the map overlap
