Published on June 5, 2026 - 5 minute read

Tutorial on how to create, edit and manage waypoints with OkMap.
In this video you will learn how to create waypoints on the map, edit their properties, customize their appearance, move them, delete them and save them to a GPX file.

Recommended prerequisite

To better understand this tutorial, we recommend watching:

Procedure:

  • Download the elevation data (DEM) required to obtain terrain information
  • Create a waypoint on the map
  • View the information associated with the waypoint
  • Edit the waypoint name, description and other properties
  • Customize the icon used to represent it on the map
  • Generate new waypoints based on distance and bearing
  • Unlock map objects to allow them to be moved
  • Move or delete waypoints when necessary
  • Use the waypoint list for additional management operations
  • Save the waypoints to a GPX file

Tips:

  • Use meaningful names to easily identify waypoints
  • Choose icons that match the type of point of interest being represented
  • Always verify the waypoint location before saving the GPX file
  • Use waypoints to highlight viewpoints, shelters, springs, or other points of interest
  • Keep the waypoint list organized by removing unnecessary waypoints
  • Save your work frequently while making changes

Notes:

  • Waypoints can contain descriptive information in addition to geographic coordinates
  • Icons allow you to visually distinguish different waypoint categories
  • Waypoints can be exported and shared through GPX files
  • Elevation information depends on the availability of DEM data

Common mistakes:

  • Placing waypoints at inaccurate locations on the map
  • Forgetting to unlock objects before attempting to move them
  • Using vague names that make waypoint identification difficult
  • Accidentally deleting important waypoints without saving the file first
  • Failing to verify waypoint information before exporting
