Raster Maps: Georeferenced Images

A raster map consists of an image made up of a grid of pixels. Each pixel contains information about the color or value of the image and, when the map is georeferenced, the position of the pixels can be associated with real geographic coordinates.

Raster maps are particularly suitable for representing already processed cartography, such as topographic maps, hiking maps, orthophotos and historical maps. The graphic appearance of the map is preserved, allowing the user to display exactly the symbols, colors, contour lines, texts and other elements present in the original cartography.

Raster maps can also be divided into tiles, as frequently happens with Web maps and many cartographic formats intended for navigation.

Vector Maps: Geographic Objects

A vector map represents the territory using geometric elements such as points, lines and polygons. These elements can describe roads, trails, buildings, waterways, contour lines, boundaries and points of interest.

Vector elements can be managed individually: they can be selected, modified, queried and displayed with different graphic properties. Organizing data into vector themes also makes it possible to separate different categories of geographic information.

Vector maps are therefore particularly suitable when the goal is to work with geographic objects rather than only with their graphic representation.

Raster and Vector Compared

The main difference concerns the way information is represented. In raster maps, information is associated with image pixels; in vector maps it is associated with geometries and their attributes.

When to Choose a Raster Map

A raster map is generally the most natural choice when you want to use an existing map while preserving its original appearance. It is particularly useful when the cartography contains graphic information that is difficult to represent as individual vector objects.

For example, a paper topographic map acquired by scanning can be georeferenced and used as a raster map. This makes it possible to overlay GPX tracks, waypoints and other geographic data without having to digitally reconstruct all the elements of the map.

Raster is also particularly suitable when you want to faithfully preserve a specific cartographic symbology, such as that used in traditional hiking or topographic maps.

When to Choose a Vector Map

A vector map is particularly useful when it is important to work with individual geographic objects. Roads, trails, buildings, points of interest and other elements can be selected, modified, filtered or displayed using different styles.

This approach is particularly useful when the map needs to be updated, queried or combined with other information. It is also possible to change the graphic representation of elements according to the zoom level or the user's needs.

Vector maps are therefore often an effective choice for data derived from OpenStreetMap or other geographic databases in which objects need to be managed separately.

Raster and Vector Can Be Used Together

The two types of data are not necessarily alternatives. In many situations, a raster map can be used as a cartographic base and vector data, such as trails, roads, waypoints, points of interest or other geographic elements, can be overlaid on it.

This approach makes it possible to combine the advantages of both representations: the raster map preserves the detail and symbology of the original cartography, while vector data can be selected, modified and managed independently of the base map.

For Hiking and Cycling: Which One to Choose?

For hiking and cycling, both solutions can be valid. The choice mainly depends on the type of information you want to have on the map.

A raster topographic map may be preferable when the level of detail, symbology and appearance of the original map are important. It is often a good solution for viewing traditional hiking cartography together with your own GPS tracks.

A vector map may instead be preferable when you want to dynamically display roads, trails and points of interest, or when you want to modify or query individual geographic elements.

It is not always necessary to choose only one solution. In many situations, raster and vector data can be used simultaneously by overlaying different information layers over the same area.

Raster and Vector Maps in OkMap

There Is No Universally Better Choice

If you want to preserve the appearance of an existing map, a raster map is generally the most suitable solution. If, on the other hand, you want to work with individual geographic objects, modify them, query them or represent them dynamically, a vector map offers more possibilities. In many cases, combining the two types provides the most complete result.
